Jim Blanton and his team have spent the last 20 years rebuilding, redesigning and otherwise enhancing the performance of manual transmissions and differentials.  Their hand-crafted, artisanal approach to engineering these machines has given them the expertise required to create custom-built products that meet the demands of both street driving and track enthusiasts.  The Performance Gearing drivetrain components are proprietary, and are designed exclusively for BMW cars.  Without question, they are custom-engineered for the very highest levels of performance possible. 

The Performance Gearing craftsmen noticed a trend toward "unit replacement" that started in the late '80s. Rather than facilitating the rebuilding of engines, BMW stopped offering repair parts for their differentials (and some transmissions).  This forced owners to purchase a new factory unit.  However, it was common knowledge within the automotive industry and among BMW enthusiasts that many of the internal components (including ring and pinion gearsets) were interchangeable as far back as 1977. The latest BMW design change put an end to this interchangeability. The introduction of the '95 models came with completely redesigned differentials.  These featured unique ring/pinion gearset dimensions -- which meant that any pre-1995 BMW internal components were now not compatible or swappable with those from later models. Not only are ring/pinion ratio options severely limited, but more important, limited slip was deleted from all but the Motorsport models. From 1965 to 1995, limited slip was a highly prized option, valued by high-performance drivers and BMW enthusiasts all around the world.  After 1995, it simply was no longer an option... until now.

"Through the streets it is a little on the wild side. Traction control does not like it when I punch it out of corners, but I do love it so much, so off the traction control goes, then things really start getting fun. High speed entries result in very nice control through corners, going slower in it feels very much to be stock, although planting it on exit has me grinning again. I have found some rear end instability on hard straight line acceleration, especially at the higher rpm side of 2nd and 3rd, the back end just sways a little side to side, manageable, but unnerving for certain passengers!

Deceleration is much improved regardless when in straight line or turning in, most apparent when on the track, when balance is at the very edge, the rear just seems to hold together so much better. Managed to shave 3-5 seconds of my track time though, so something must be right!
